let’s not yell at each other

One of the experiences many caregivers have is not hearing their family member or loved one calling from them. This can be a real problem particularly for bed ridden patients. This problem also often leads to people yelling at each other from room to room, which can lead to an unnecessary elevation of stress. I’ve found calling each other on the phone can be almost as stressful if it means that in additions to calls from doctors and well-wishers you phone rings multiple times a day with a request for medicine or help getting out of bed. Luckily, there’s a simple solution to this problem. The simplest and cheapest is a good old -fashioned hospitality bell like the ones you often see in hotels in vintage movies. You can also try a meditation gong, sometimes called a singing bowl, if you’d like something that is a bit more harmonious. For the more tech minded there are wireless pager systems that allow the patient to push a button and signal the caregiver. Many people use baby monitors which allows the patient to say what they need, though as a caution, the caregiver can’t answer back. Most baby monitors have video cameras now which can be helpful, they allow you to fold laundry or make a meal while the patient is sleeping so you can keep an eye on them. Some people adopt walkie talkies so that they can have two way conversations, though I’ve found for older patients the technology is a bit challenging for them. For all of these tools consider the battery life and range of the device based on the distance you’ll be apart.
